Help to identify carb and engine(with pictures

Hi guys.
I have recently purchased a "new to me" boat as described in my signature. I was told, when I bought it, that it had been repowered in 2008 due to poor winterization by the local marina. He said it had approx 30 hours on it and it had been broke in properly. I have since changed the altanator, and had the carb rebuilt because it was badly plugged up and would not idle.
The carb guy said the carb was a Carter and the Merc dealer said it only came with a Quad or a Rodchester. So here is my Question. Could someone please identify this car and engine. The numbers are on the engine cover in one of the pictures. Thanks. Ken

Mercruiser weber 4brl carb. You should be able to find a part number on it. Model number is on left hand tab of pic #2, but I couldn't read it.

The plastic cover is most likely from the original engine, not a replacement block.

Looks like a merc intake manifold (low rise q jet) with a qjet to squarebore adapter. This is found on many mercs in early to mid 90's.

Get your digital camera and find your engines serial number.

Is this all stock. What you are seeing is the gasket sitting on the manifold. The new gasket I ordered by the serial #, is not the same as the one you can see in the picture. I'm also wondering about the thunderbolt ignition. I have no idea what that looks like or where it is.
There is a tag on the side of the engine that says it built in 2008 and bored 0.030 over. I guess what i am wondering is if I need parts, can I order them by serial # or is always going to be trial and error. Thanks for your quick response, Ken

My guess would be that bought a rebuilt long block and moved all pieces from the original engine to it. For most items, the serial # should be fine. Show a pic of the new carb gasket you got. From MercruiserParts.com, I got part # 27-41610 for the gasket, and it looks like the gasket in the picture. maybe you got the gasket that goes under the spreadbore to squarebore adapter.

I couldn't see a module in the one engine picture. Take a picture of the back of the distributer.

Man, you need a crane to hold you by the ankels and lower you into the hole for those pictures. lol. Don, is this the serial # you were asking for. Also included the picture of the wrong gasket and the back of the distributor. Just noticed that serial # above the starter on the block is the same as on the carb cover. That means they repaired this block? KenView attachment 108640View attachment 108641View attachment 108642

Links are not working.

"Due to poor winterization" usually means cracked block.

Yes, I was told they cracked the block. The engine runs really good. I'm just trying to identify the carb and engine so I know what I have.

Well, if you don't see any welding or JB Weld on the sides of the block, then maybe they got a replacement engine from another boat. Others here have access to merc system and can provide some history given the serial number. I still can't see the additional pictures, otherwise would comment on the T5 question.

That looks like a Webber carb. But Edelbroch/Carter look the same. They are all identical. You probably have a 5.7L (GM) 350 engine. You should be able to get that carb gasket at any auto parts store.

That is a Carter carb number 9605S stamped on the lower left corner of the flange. Edelbroch parts would work in the carb.

That is a small block chevy. Probably a 350. crap shoot on the carb, though

Carb is a Carter AFB, although depending on the year it may be an Edelbrock AFB, Carter design manufactured for Edelbrock by Weber. Most parts will still interchange. Once you have the numbers you will be able to determine for sure.

That gasket is for a spreadbore carb, not a squarebore, like you have. It is probably the gasket that goes under the adapter that is mounted on the top of your intake. As mentioned above, you can get the standard squarebore gasket, like what is in your picture, at any auto parts store.

The module is on the distributer, but a little dark in the picture. There should be some numbers on it, and maybe a designation like V22A. From what I can see, I'd guess Thunderbolt IV.

Carter, Weber, Edelbroch. Whats the difference! It's a 600 cfm carb that you wont have the troubles from as if you had a quadrajet. Good carb.

Given the model 96XX, it would be 600cfm. There are allot of same parts, but you do have to be careful. Merc used allot of 750cfm carbs on their sbc. In fact the 600 was only used on the 5.7L, and not the LX or 350 MAG. While this isn't one of them, Merc also had "special" 2 step rod versions of the Weber carb. So, no matter what, you have to know what you have and not assume that any edelbrock, carter, or weber part will work.

Re: Help to identify carb and engine(with pictures

Thanks for all the responses. I would like to fine tune it today. What I understand I need to do is:
1- turn screws all the way in( just snug)
2- back them out 2 turns
3- start engine and let warm up
4- turn one screw in until it starts to stumble
5- back it out til the rpms start to rise
6- find spot some where in middle between 4 and 5
7- repeat on other screw
8- set idle to between 650 and 750 rpm

This is what the carb guy who rebuilt it told me to do. Am I close?

: Should be 1 1/4 turns out for your carb

3- start engine and let warm up
4- turn one screw in until it starts to stumble
5- back it out til the rpms start to rise
6- find spot some where in middle between 4 and 5
7- repeat on other screw
8- set idle to between 650 and 750 rpm

: in gear

This is what the carb guy who rebuilt it told me to do. Am I close?

Disconnect throttle cable, before adjustment. Repeat idle mixture, idle speed, a few cycles. Timing should be done prior to this.
