Well it a 1982 based on my manuals, based on the hood, it looks like a 7.5, but that said, they both used the same hood with different graphics, what carb does it have on it? The jets are different between the two motors, but a lot of the parts are interchangeable on those two motors. I am not 100% sure, but a lower unit off either should work. Some of the older Mercs are hard to completely ID. I am sure some of the experts on here will blow my theory out of the water but you should be pretty safe picking up a lower unit from either a 7.5 or a 9.8

IDK which it is. It seems weird that neither the cowl nor lower cover have the original stickers. The lower one had the hp version on it. Another site (Johnsoldmercurysite.com) is mainly for older Mercs,1980s and earlier. Some of those guys have worked on many smaller Mercs. It costs a small fee to join but you view topics without joining. Like the other poster said, the carb may be the only difference between the two.
