my 00 mercruiser wil not start properly. it takes about 15-20 turns of ignition the first time of the day to get it to turn over one time? all i hear is a clicking noise sounds like at starter. The starter was rebuilt in last year, battery new, connections cleaned and tight, solinoid near carb new. Just like when it wants it will catch and turn over. otherwise just a clicking im so lost. if i try to jump it at soliniod i will get spark but no turn over.. and think ignition is fine as it will start when it wants properly and shut it down properly....Oh and after it does start one time it seems like it starts much easier for anytime after that. Very very weird.

Re: HELP! starting problem clicking noise??

It sounds like the bendix is stuck. After so many times of being hit, it finaly releases. As for after it is started, it is loosened up for the time.

If you can reach it with a small craft hammer, hit it on the side a couple of times before you start it. If it cranks, there's your problem.

I had mine rebuilt, two weeks later at the cabin, no crank. assumed my battery was dead because it CAN'T be the starter. After switching and nothing, tapped it with the hammer, no probs the rest of the week. One week after that...NEW starter!

Has the starter been submerged in water since you had it rebuilt last year?

Ayuh,... And now they've had a whole year to corrode....
Remove, Sand, Reinstall, then Grease the connections,...
Both ends of All the wires....

Re: HELP! starting problem clicking noise??

yes i think it might of gotten a little wet it had some orange rusty looking color to it as water got it. But yea i took off all connections wired them down even cut back cable on battery wire put new battery connector ends. And then yup it started it up fine.....BUT.......im not sure if its just because i had it going before and that bendix thing was freed. Tommorow morning going to test it again see what i got. and yes put little grease on them..
Thanks guys i will post in the am with what i got.

If it has been submerged you need to take it off and have a closer look. You may need to have it rebuilt. At the very least you may just have to regrease the shaft that the bendix is on. You really don't want it to get to the point where you are in the middle of nowhere and it won't work at all.
