HELP SHIFT SHAFT!

Just changed my water pump on my 1985 75hp Mercury outboard I left it in forward gear put it back in the shaft had to move wouldn't line up got a socket to fit on the shaft turned it into forward gear and it locks when moving CCW AND CW and goes into neutral and reverse fine reverse locks in Ccw and clicks when moving CW. What is wrong and how can I fix it please!?

Is it suppose to be locked both ways when u turn the prop while in forward if so then that Answers everything?

Put the gear shift into full forward position and manualy turn the flywheel clockwise when viewed from the top and the prop should turn clockwise, then put it in neutral and the prop should rotate freely in both directions, then put it in the full reverse position and turn the flywheel clockwise again and the prop should turn counter clockwise.

Something is mixed up here.--------When in FORWARD you can turn it CW and it will click, CCW and it will lock up.-------Reverse it locks both ways.----Just the way the clutch dog is designed !!

Okay thanks!!! I got the lower unit back on it works now!! I didn't know how it would move the bit in forward when t clicks CW and lock up CCW but I started it put it in forward and it done great! Guess that's how them clutches are designed?
