New to area and boating. I have a 21? sport deck/fish boat. Have the charts, will be buying GPS. Looking for areas to take wife and 2 small kids to beach/drop anchor and have a ?day at the beach? (not looking to fish). I launch out of Blythe Island Park and would prefer to find locations from there. Looking for sandbars or beach that others enjoy with family. Any suggestions (even the obvious) welcome. I?ve been doing the obvious of taliking w/ everyone I can, local marinas, etc. Unfortunately, most everyone is more familiar w/ areas to the NE end of SSI (Egg Island/Pelican spit).

Thanks

I am not out of Brunswick, I am out of Savannah. I mostly boat Ossabaw Sound and St Catherine's sound and plan to venture further south to Blackbeard Island. Both have very nice Islands that you can anchor off of and spend the day. This is primarily what I do and the family loves it. I will tell you get the GPS and the Blue-water charts for the area but even with them, get advice from the locals. The sandbars are nasty and I have found the charts/Blue-water are not completely accurate and where it say 12' it could really mean no feet. Once you figure your area out you will have a blast. The law in Georgia as far as I understand it is that you are authorized to beach on any island during daylight hours but can not go past the high tide line. Check out this website for boat launches:

Great place to start and plan your trips.

I grew up on St. Simons, My Dad still keeps his house at Hampton Point so I can tell you pretty much what you already know. Pelican spit, egg island. I grew up fishing and boating those waters. if you are going south try around the Satilla River. Jekyll Point or maybe Little Cumberland Island.

you can run down the Brunswick river to the ICWW and south from there. if you have the charts, GPS, also check out Google Earth to have a birdseye view. This area has good resolution. You can see some great creeks which you might get into.

Its a great place to be "new to the area" and to raise kids. talking about growing up on St. Simons always makes me grin. I am taking my wife and our six month old there in June to visit family/friends.
