Help, prop is stuck on my 74-40hp Merc. Can I still remove the lower unit to get at the water pump without taking to prop off? Also, please don't tell me I need to cut it off. Am not sure how to do that. :( If I do get into the pump, do I look for a water pump kit or just try to replace the old seals etc.? Thanx for any help. Dmz.

Just drop the lower unit as was said above. You dont have to remove the prop to change the water pump impeller and housing. Change your lower gear lube. If its got water you may have to remove the prop to change the seals. Their is a prop puller that you can use. You really need to remove your prop every year and clean and grease the splines with marine grease to prevent this problem.

Sometimes the only way to remove a seriously stubborn prop is to burn away the rubber within the hub. A new hub must then be pressed into place. Once you do get your prop off (in whatever fashion necessary), you'd be very wise to heed T Trent's advice and keep your prop shaft lubed.

Although you don't have to remove the prop to remove the lower unit when you go to replace the water pump impeller...you should still consider getting that prop off in the event you need to replace it out on the water. Providing, of course, you carry a spare prop with ya.

Senor 'depo,
When ya get that lower unit off, turn it so's tha shaft is pointing up and soak it down good with some good penetrating oil like kroil, NOT WD-40, let her sit a coupla dayz and then support prop blades on wooden blocks, close to hub, install prop nut but leave loose, 1/2" inch or so of shaft sticking through so if ya bugger the threads on the shaft ya can fix 'um. Use a hard plastic mallet or block of wood and drive the shaft out of prop hub. This orta work for ya. If not, get back to us.

c/6

hooty
