Guys... need some advise..

Got a guy to install a new prop on my searay 185 ( mercury alpha 1 , Gen 2)
When replacing the propeller the installer didn’t install the thrust washer. As a result the propeller has grinded/ worn the gear housing.

Now if I install the propeller with the thrust washer, there is a 1 -2 cm gap between propeller and gear housing.

I have added photos of machined housing and spacing between housing and prop when the thrust washer installed.

Is this something repairable? Do I need to repair this? Went to a marine to repair, the quote is to replace the lower unit ( 3k). What’s the advise from you all.. thanks

That's pretty messed up, looks like 1/2" + has been worn off the lower unit. You need a new lower unit , or lower unit housing (complete lower unit probably cheaper).

I bet you couldn't get the lower unit apart for repairs/seals, looks like the carrier retainer threads are messed up from the wear.

It must have been very noisey for the first few minutes after installing the prop

Since it doesn't look like it touched the internal parts, couldn't it run like this until repaired properly?? Just curious.

Not sure who this "guy" is but he would be flipping the bill. I can't understand how or why that wasn't noticed at time of install. Even to the untrained eye, spinning by hand it would be pretty obvious.
