HELP, Pre alpha upper unit, how to tell gear ratio?

I purchased a used outdrive with 1.65 gears. Both the upper and lower housings are cracked, how can I tell the gear ratio's for sure? I can see the gears but I have not stripped the drive down yet.

count the teeth on both gears in the upper

24 and 24 = 1.65:1 ratio

I might have, not sure. I am couting 24 teeth on both gears so this is a 1.65:1 correct?

I wonder what it would cost for a shop to transfer the gears and yoke into my blown 120HP housing? Any idea?

they're gonna have to re-shim the gears and re-seal the drive = labor

What would happen if I just slapped them in? I know this sounds dumb, but if the shims are simply transfered over in the exact order, wouldn't this work?

Maybe I should just keep hunting for another drive...............this sucks!

only if the castings for the drive cases are exactly identical, which is pretty much impossible

it may work, but it probably wouldn't

if the shimming were incorrect the drive would spin and work but you would shred the gears in no time under a load
