I bought a 88 bayliner with 125 force. wires were hanging loose from switch and so I put a new switch in. I bought a marine battery and it fired up after a few cranks. ran smooth for a minute or so. I then noticed the positive side cable was extremenly hot. after a week or so I decided to try it out for the first time on the water. Tried starting and it turned over for a minute but did not start. battery seemed dead although I charged it up the night before. When I looked at the battery the positive side had melted off and the little bolt had come loose and the cable was on the floor. I thought it might be the battery and tried a different new battery and now NOTHING happens. no click, nothing. What should I try? I know a mechanic will eventually work on this but as you can tell by me buying a 22 year old boat my finances are not great. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Wires were loose from what switch? You didn't crank it for a minute straight did you? Try resetting the circuit breaker inside the cowl of the engine.

If you are certian that you put the right wire on the right terminal in the new switch, I would think that either the switch is bad or one the the wires is shorting. I would recheck every connection, the check the wires for insulation missing, check fuse(20amp max).
I put in a new gauge that wouldn't work, when I pulled it out, one of the ring terminals shifted against the ground terminal.
Good luck.
