my 1975 85 h.p mercury will not turn over by the ignition key.I just jumped the solenoid and it turns over.Am i correct in assuming this would be a bad solenoid..thanks charie
to be exact there are 4 prongs total...1 large in rear and 1 large in front and 1 small on each side.i used a screw driver to connect large in back with small on left hand side and it turns over.i hope this helps..thanks

Sounds like you have a problem with the wiring or ignition switch. The Large terminal in back is connected to the battery, and you jumped it to the s terminal which is what the key would supply voltage to. You bypassed the key and not the solenoid. If you put a test light/voltmeter on the S terminal it shoild read 0V unless the key is turned to Start position, the S terminal should go to 12V
thanks wifisher, i just figured out my problem is in the control box.if i turn the key in neutral i got nothing,but if i move the gear shifter forward a little it starts to turn over.if not for this site i would of ran out and bought a new solenoid,thought for sure that was it thanks again,charlie1975

Probably need to adjust your shift cable a little. Put it in neutral and look at your shift linkage at the motor. Your neutral safety switch is probably not in the correct position.
