72 Enenrude 50. After 2 minutes of running with muffs, the overheat alarm goes off. Cyl head feels real hot. To date I've replaced the impeller, replaced the entire water pump. Replaced the thermostat. Tried without thermostat or bypass spring. Flushed water directly into tube that connects to water pump.
I was sure problem was tube not mating up to water pump because it always was pushed off to the side when I dropped the lower unit. I made a guide that guarantees the tube goes into the water pump. STILL OVERHEATS. HELP.
Nick

Re: help on overheat !

So youre saying that it overheats when the hose is hooked directly to the copper tube?

I never tried running it with the hose connected to the copper tube. If it did work I'd have to buy a couple miles of garden hose to go anywhere :) .
No - I just used the hose to flush anything that might have plugged the pasages.
Nick

Are you sure you are giving it enough water through the garden hose. Try running it in a barrel if you can.

Re: help on overheat !

I'll admit I got pretty disgusted with the overheat and was almost ready to throw in the towel. But after letting the project sit for a few weeks I tried a new tact. Dropped the lower unit and made some measurements from the copper tube bottom to the top of the water pump. It was short by 3/4 inch. Apparently someone had installed the lower with the tube on top of the pump collar and pushed / bent the tube up.

To fix I took a piece of 1/2 in copper tube that just slides over the 3/8 in tube on the motor. Epoxied the 1/2 in tube to the water pump clamp so that when I installed the pump bolts the tube would be compressed against the rubber gromet. Then ran a dowel inside the 1/2 in tube that fit inside the 3/8 in tube and filled the excess with RTV Silicone. Slid the whole thing over the 3/8 in tube, raised the lower unit a bit, installed the water pump bolts and finished raising the lower unit.

Viola ! No overheat.
Nick
