help on changing a impeller

i have a 1974 50hp evinrude that has been in storage for 3 years,seems to run fine on test muffs,but not sure of the impeller, there does not seems to be a pee hole,but motor does not appear to be running hot.it has a hydro-mechanical lower unit,according to the manual (clymers) i need to remove a bolt under the lower carb to disengage the shift level,i can not seem to find this bolt.thanks for any help

You will find the head of the shift rod release screw facing you from the port side of the engine. It is as shown in the thumbnail. Click the thumbnail to enlarge it, please.

Note the dotted line that shows how the parts connect to the shift lever.

follow the shift lever across under the block.

These,like so many OMC's, are a pain. The screw is under the lower carb and a b* to get at with the carbs in place. Take a pen light and look from the port side. You will need a split screw driver to hold the screw to push it back in. Need to shift into reverse I think to be able to access the screw. What a crappy design but with a bit of cussing it is possible to get it done.
