The engine needs 3-4 tries before starting, does not idle well and loses power and becomes unstable at about half throtle??

If I crank the throtle very fast from idle, the engine tends to choke and stop??

Is this a fuel problem, carb?? Is there something I can do myself..I really don't want to go through the hassle of taking the motor out and take it to a mechanics

Please help

It sounds like a dirty carb. But, it could be a variety of things....all of which are more expensive to fix than just cleaning the carb. When you are done for the day, are you disconnecting the gas line from the engine and letting the engine run at an idle until it runs itself out of gas?

Thanks Elvin: No, I leave the line connected and don't run engine at an idle until it runs itself out of gas.

Thanks

It has been my experience that small four strokes are extremely sensitive to fuel qwuality. The jets in the carbs are very small. I have fought this for several years with an 8 hp Honda.

Running them out of fuel helps. Running treated fuel (Sea Foam-NAPA) helps that much more.

99.99% positive it's a dirty carb. Clean it and start running the fuel out.

Many thanks guys!

Today I gave my outboard a chock treatment. First I sprayed a carb cleaner in the air intake (without removing the plastic cap because I did it while on the water anchored at my mooring buoys). After that, I added another carburetor cleaner (Wynns carburetor cleaner) to the gas tank. After a while, the outboard started running much better and it is now idling ok. I also changed the spark plugs. It still takes 2-3 tries before starting. I hope this will continue until the end of the season, after which I will take it for a tune up and carb cleanup.

At the end of the day I tried emptying the carb by idling the motor but it took for ever!!!. Is it necessary to do this after each use? or just when the outboard is not used for a long period.

Thanks again!

Ben

If your smart...every single time. But, only because you may intend to "use it tomorrow" and something comes up and all of a sudden it's four months later and your carburetor is full of El Crapo.

I would suggest adding SeaFoam to your gas. It not only cleans great, but also stabilizes it.
