If the one in the picture is the one you are asking about, and you want to replace the cables you do not need to take it apart.
The cable connections inside are visible depending on what position the handle is in. Remove the aluminum shield and the small cotter pins. There is what looks like a “hairpin” that can be removed with a hook scribe and the roller pin can be extracted with a #6 screw. Needless to say do not loose the small “hairpin”, they tend to take flight when they come out.

It's a 72. I'm having so much trouble with finding info.

If you clicked on the link in my post it takes you to a page with all controls.
Then click 1985 and below
Then find your control.
I found this one which looks like yours
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s.../32080/2182/40

but there are a few others in the listing.

Most knobs can be removed by moving the handle fin full forward position, then take a small flat blade screw driver and the button should pop out. You should then be able to remove the screw/bolt under the cap

go to boatinfo.com

look in mercrusier service manual #1 first. remote controls. you'll find all the info about your remote there i'd guess. personally, i did the research on service manaul #2. pp 7c4 has a full description of what appears to be your remote that you posted the pic of.
