It might help if you say what kind of trailer. Two of mine have the ID plate on the right side rail near where it meets the tongue. On a homemade trailer it may be stamped somewhere on the tongue or wherever the state it was titled in requires it to be located.

What size is it? One of mine is a Yacht Club 16' tailer. The ID plate (may be just a sticker rather than a screwed or riveted plate) is on the right (starboard) side rail just aft of the junction of the tongue and the rail. Have you looked at www.yachtclubtrailers.com to see if they still have a similar one? If there is no longer an ID plate on the trailer, tell your DMV and ask what solution they might have for you. Here in Minnesota, I'll just need to fill out a "Statement of Fact" to get mine titled and licenced (lost the title, bill of sale and identity of the previous owner).

I know when I made a homebuilt one, I had to put the #'s on the tounge and on the axle. I'd check there too.

Personally, I think a main frame member would be the best place for a number. Axles and sometimes tongues can be replaced (bolt-on) when damaged (bent). If you signifigantly damage the main frame, I think it's getting time for a new trailer.

If I was planning to keep the 1960 15' Wizard I got from Grandma, I'd seriously consider rebuilding the trailer it's on (registered as manufactured, but I think it looks closer to home made). It definately needs help (rollers & bunks), the keel sits in the crotch of a 1.5" angle iron. :(
