Re: Help! need engine age of an Evinrude
Hi BBuck,
Your engine is indeed a 1955 - the only year they used the Aquasonic name on the motors. Your motor is still a good design, but needs a couple of things to keep it running strong...

First, assuming it is basically healthy (good compression, nothing obviously broken) then move on to the various systems. Unless the previous owner can tell you for sure that the water pump impeller was replaced in the last year or so, drop a new one in there. New impellers run about $10.00.

Second, pull the recoil off, and pop the access cover off the top of the flywheel to inspect the ignition. If the coils have a chalky residue on them or appear to be cracked, replace them. You'll have to get a 3-point puller to get the flywheel off, but it's worth it. You can replace all of the ignition components for under $50.00.

Third, check the gas lines. If they appear to be at all checked or cracked, replace them. 1/8" I.D. fuel hose sells for pennies a foot.

Fourth, check the lower unit oil. If it appears to be milky, drain it and refill it with 90wt. hypoid lower unit oil.

You should be goot to go at this point. A manual from Seloc for 1972 and prior Evinrudes should get close enough to your motor to be useful if needed. Some libraries may have a reference material as well. Even if the date on the cover doesn't go back far enough, not a lot changed in the basic systems.

Finally, once you get everything checked/replaced, feed it a steady diet of 24:1 gas/oil (quart oil to 6 gallons gas). That motor still has bronze babbit bearings and needs the extra oil.

Have fun!
- Scott
