Hi i new to this site.I have an engine mount that I can't tighten the bolts they just spin . There is 1/2" ?3" lag bolts. I can't go any longer . Is there any epoxy or something out there that I can install in the holes so the bolts will grab. The other three mount are fine. Tired to add some hard wood in the holes and bolts still won't get tight. Thanks for any help.

Re: Help motor mounts

Likely your stringer is rotten.... You will need to remove the bolts and take a sample.... HOPE that you get drill shavings and not soggy mush.....

IF your stringer is solid you can repair the hole and re drill.

Re: Help motor mounts

Best bet would be to remove those lags and drill through. Then replace with Stainless Steel bolts.

Sorry I misunderstood, thought this was an outboard engine.

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

I agree with smokeonthewater. The stringer needs to be checked carefully for rot.

Yeah, drilling through the hull is one way to go, just not a good one! Feel better soon, bud!

Re: Help motor mounts

best bet would be to spend 30-40 bucks and buy "Git-Rot" penetrating epoxy. If you follow directions, this product will restore the stringer to better than new condition. After using the Git-Rot, fill the hole with a high quality non-penetrating epoxy. Drill the correct size hole for your lag bolt and screw it in. Git-Rot or the generic equivalent is an epoxy that always stays flexible. If it penetrates and then manages to fill the hole also, then simply drill and lag into it.

I never did like the lag bolt method of engine mounting. If it is at all possible a bolt with a nut and washer inside the encapsulated stringer is a better alternative

Re: Help motor mounts

I'm going to first ask if this is an inboard or an inboard outboard (I/O). Inboard engine mounts need to be a good bit more solid and I would not recommend any 'Git-rot' types of cure.

Re: Help motor mounts

Assuming this is an I/O the if bolt is free spinning (stripped)perhaps on the motor mount block? or the stringer? this can mean there could be some issue with the motor mount block(not uncommon) especially when "lag bolts" are used. What year boat? What does the hole show you? wet mulch evidence on the threads of the bolt? It could mean that motor mount has been water soaked, that may have compromised it (not uncommon). Replacing a motor mount isn't the most difficult thing, but w/o pictures and more info, it just a guess.

How far can I jack up the front of the engine without damaging anything. I need to replace the motor mounts. 4.3 ltr V6 I/O. I put a small car jack under flywheel and raised the motor just enough to take the load off the motor mounts. I got out the 4 wood screws that held the motor mounts to the stringer. I want to lift engine a little higher to slide a 1/4 piece L shaped aluminum under the motor mount. Will that hurt anything. I don't want to damage the transom. Stringer are mush!!

Welcome to iboats If your stringers are mush you either need to tear the boat apart and rebuild them or take it to the landfill.... It is NOT safe to operate with rotten bones Also you need your own thread .... It isn't fair to the original poster to hijack his/her thread We should be able to get a mod to fix this shortly. .
