Howdy! I have "come into" an old Mercury outboard and can't seem to be able to figure out how to get the cover off to start to service it (haven't got service manual yet). It's a 7.5 HP motor Serial No. 3456974 (based on this, I have determined that it is a 1972 model). There is a number 2 decal on the aft end of the cover. There are a pair of levers tucked under a frame that rotate downward, but I don't see that this immediately does anything. Any ideas?

Thanks! -djm

Hi DJ,
Those levers pull down and the hood pulls up. Voila!
- Scott

Aha! Thanks Scott! I just needed to push harder. I just took a seat (not that comfortable) on the shaft the pushed with all my (considerable) ... (OK, not all that considerable!) might and managed to pop the cover off. Looks like somebody replaced the gasket and used some sort of clear silicone caulk to glue it in. They must have not let it dry before reinstalling the cover 'cause it was Steeeeee-uck!

Thanks again! -djm
---------------------------
Dan Miller
