When it comes to engines I realize it is not my subject.
I own a custom made 30' 1954 wooden sailboat originally equipped with an inboard, but now using a Mariner 15 HP outboard.
The outboard does the job well - 5.5 knots - but I am not very happy with the looks of it hanging out from stern; additionally, it is mounted in such a way that it takes two to lower and/or lift it.
While planning on a cost effective change back to inboard, I have been told the best would be to install a used car engine (very cheap) converted to saltwater cooling system. Is this possible and efficient?
Another friend told me to install the same outboard as an inboard using a saildrive. Again, can you get a saildrive for the Mariner 15 HP? How would you wash the engine if it is permanently under sea water?
Of course, there is always the choice of buying and installing a used marine inboard, but they are very scarce around here.
Hope somebody can help me.

Carlos Silva
Callao, PERU
