Hi all! Potential boat buyer here, new to the forum, looking at a boat. Seller didn't really know what this was but thought it was some sort of water intake because at a lake inspection, the inspector made him block it off and the boat overheated.

Can anyone tell me what the heck this is? The boat in question is a 2011 Larson Senza 206 (4.3 Mercruiser) and from what I can tell, it's NOT a factory part.

Thank you so much!

Being the boat has an Alpha Stern Drive and the/an impeller is located in the lower unit of the drive, (As an just in case) Check the lower front of the starboard side of the engine for an engine mounted/belt driven Impeller water pump assembly too....
Just below #2,

Depending on water intake type/design on this boat, you may have to block it off with tape, etc. and put the ear muffs on the lower drive unit or if that pickup is run/routed direct to an engine mounted pump then it's more challenging to run the engine out of the lake water.

Either way this boat needs either 1 or 2 new impellers depending on design hook up...The only way to really know to to start tracing water lines inside the boat.

First, thank you so much for taking the time! Really appreciate it.
Second, I’ll get a better look at the engine, but I’ve owned an I/O before, and that boat, like pretty much every boat I’ve seen did NOT have this extra pickup/pump, and relies exclusively on the out drive impeller (I think). So, lastly, and if you would/could care to speculate: why would someone add this? Does it provide superior cooling than the stern drive impeller? I do not think this was ever a factory option, but this boat only has 100 hours on it, so I can’t imagine it was added to fix something. But who knows?
thank you again so much!

Based on what I’m reading, this was likely added due to an obstruction in the original system.
Thanks again for helping!
Best,
J
