I live near a lake that is supposed to be well stocked with Walleye. I know nothing about fishing for them. I have lucked out and caught one keeper while trolling a crank bait and have caught a few finger length fish with a minnow while fishing for crappie. Hints would be appreciated.
Heres a link to a lake map if you wanna look. Not a real good map. http://www.anglersfishinginfo.com/mo/longview/longview.html
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Help me catch Walleye

Learnin a new body of water is tough.

I would drift or troll, if permitted, over and along all the points. Preference given to the areas that have some change in depth, from about 6 to 20 feet. If there are boulders, logs, or weeds near the dropoffs, the walleyes will hang close by, they will go deep to find dark and cooler water, then enter the boulders or weed edges to get the baitfish as the sun starts sinking.

A light spinner rig with a minnow, leech, or crawler works. Or a small jig and minnow or crawler. Work them slowly along the weed edges or thru the rocks, near bottom or a few feet above.

If the lake is generally flat, try a mud flat area where they may go to feed for hatching larvae. On one lake I go to, we drag a minnow and jig across the bottom, in only 4 feet of water.

In spring, I would fish the water below the dam. Small jigs w/minnow, cast into the spillway, let the current take it down to the fish.

Roscoe said it well. You will have to spend so time out there learning. This time of year I would start with bottom bouncers and crawlers while drifting. Later in the fall trolling with crank baits may improve your catch. Good luck!

After looking at the map, I would try the drift/Trolling over the point at the Mouse Creek Boat Ramp. Hard to tell without the depths on the map. Also this time of year, I would try the deeper river channels. Slow, live bait should be the key in the heat right now.
D

Kenny-
Thanks for e-mail!
I work with a guy that is from your area and has told me a bit about the walleye fishing there at Cedar Bluff. Know any of the Foster family?

It's ironic, but the park office at The Bluffs is the office I report to....I can't say I know the Fosters, but I actually live on the Kansas/colorado boarder. The fisheries biologist I work under is based there.....You wanna see walleye, come out the first week of april when we test net walleye.....11-12lbers dime a dozen.
Measurement, weight, release. Twice a week for 3 weeks. The growth rates are unbelievable since the lake went from 1000acres to 7000 acres in '93-95. This lake is just getting started.... :D

Re: Help me catch Walleye

We sample fish for general condition and numbers of fish caught in TRAP nets, not gill nets. It's a funnel at the end of a net simular to a flat gill net but the mesh is close weave as to not hook fish, but rather force them in to the funnel. By keeping track of #'s and particular sizes of walleye, you can calculate growth rates and population statis. also the male to female ratio can be determined.
This method is widely used and is the best way to accurately forcast fishing success expected for the year. :)

hey finally a topic i can add some expertise on I fish walleye tourny's all the time both on the RCL and PWT circuit but i admit Roscoe basically hit it dead on. Im gonna look at the map and see where i can send you but another thing is to control your drift as you pace over certain structure you need to slow the bait down big time one method you can try is to back troll over the underwater structure
