I have a 1996 Mariner 4hp two stroke. It always starts and runs flawlessly- until last week. Now when running flat out for ten or so minutes it *MAY* suddenly cut out. It will re-start first pull and run at idle speed, but die if the throttle is opened up. (In which case it will again start first pull) If it is put into neutral it will rev freely without a stutter. Eventually, the engine can be coaxed to run flat out again without problem. I don't think this is an electrical problem, although it is sudden, it is not intermittent in nature when it goes, and it runs smoothly with no backfire, judder or "misses". I think it is a fuel issue. Other times it runs with no apparent problem. Has anyone got a clue?

Please email me at martin242@shaw.ca with your responses.

Re: HELP Mariner Outboard Quits

Howdy, Martin.

I would look for water or debris in the fuel tank or carb bowl.

Good luck. :)
