HELP!! Lower unit pob

Hello I am haveing a problem with my 1978 Johnson 70hp. When I shift into foward my boat goes in reverse and shift into reverse I go forward. If I put shifter into forward, turn flywheel clockwise in forward gear the prop should turn clockwise also.<br />Right or Wrong????

HI is your engine an electric shift, has there been work done on it lately, is this boat new to you or did the problem just start occuring out of nowhere? and i think you re right, it should turn, clockwise for forward gear....

I installed a water pump and new cables.It is not a electric shift.The motor is new to me . I was also wondering if you pull up on shift rod is that foward or do you have to push down on shift rod to get forward. I also found out that the lower unit came off of a johnson 70 hp 1975.

Early model 3 cyl motors used a pull for reverse shift setup. Later models use pull for forward. Go find an older motor and take the entire shift linkage assembly and install it on your motor. I made this same mistake when I first became an outboard mechanic. Luckily no one was hurt. This is a major safety issue!

Thanks dave , I got a hold of the guy I bought the motor from and he does have the shift linkage from the 1975. I'll try it tonite. Thanks

i am having the same problem with my 1976 75hp rude i changed the lower unit on it and i don't know what year the unit is but if i take the linkage loose from the shifter and standing from the back i push the linkage foward it goes into foward help please

In my first post when I said pull for forward I was referring to the action on the shift rod itself. The control box cable will always move towards the bow for forward and towards the stern for reverse. With the key off and the control in forward, rotate the flywheel clockwise and the prop should turn clockwise.
