Help-Lower unit oil change

Hello,
I am changing the oil in my 2000 Capri-Alpha 1 leg. It has the oil reservoir on the engine.

I changed the oil as per the manufacturers manual. The last part is topping up the reservoir. It says to remove the vent plug, fill the reservoir and when the oil leaks from the vent, plug it again and top the reservoir off. When I fill the reservoir it does not go down and does not leak out of the vent, so I assume the tube that goes from the reservoir is not filling.

Should I go ahead and close it up and it will suck oil when it needs it and I can top it up, or will this cause some kind of air lock and trouble?

Thanks,
Steve.

Assuming you filled from the bottom fill hole, and the drive is down and the fluid made it up to the vent, you are almost there. If you leave the vent out and fill the reservoir a little, it should flow out the vent. If it's not, you got a vacuum bubble in the tube or something.

You should be filling the lower unit (from the bottom) until it comes out the vent plug on the lower unit. Replace the vent plug, open the lid on the resevoir and continue fill from the bottom of the lower unit until lube is visable in the resevoir on the engine. Stop filling, replace drain plug on lower unit, then top of the resevoir, by pouring directly into the resevoir, until lube reaches the fill line.

Cheers.

Re: Help-Lower unit oil change

Thanks for the replies. I did exactly that, filled from the bottom until it leaked out the vent. The topped off the reservoir. But when I filled the reservoir (witht he vent plug still removed) the level in the reservoir did not go down. It says in the manual that once the tube for the reservoir fills the level should drop. But how much should it drop? I've left it for a few hours now and it's dropped maybe 1/4 inch in the reservoir. So does it sound ok or does it sound like an air lock? If it is, will it work itself out or do I need to do something?

Thanks!

Just re-read your replies. I didn't do it exactly that way. I will pop the drain plug out and fill it from the drain until it reaches the reservoir, then top the reservoir off.

Thanks again.
Steve.
