Help! Lost wheel

I lost a wheel off of my tandem axel pontoon trailer.
All the lugs sheared off. Hub and bearing are good, spins freeley and no wobble.
Wheel and tire sailed off into the wild blue and I was unable to find it.
I was able to limp to a friends and leave the trailer and boat but I need to get it home.
My question is:
Are all of the lug patterns the same? Can I buy the wheel, mount a tire and just put it on or should I remove one of the other wheel/tires and take with me to get a new one.
Thanks,
Poppa Clay

Thanks Plyxrs, I was thinking that was correct but wanted to make sure before I picked a new one up.

Take one with you !!

Age of trailer, size of wheel/tire, type of trailer, will all play a factor in what hubs and wheels you have.

True, MOST modern trailers will be the same, but not all.

This ^. It will save you time in he long run. Don't forget you need a new hub or at least new studs and lugs.

If it's a 5 lug pattern, be sure to get a 5(lug) x 4 1/2 (inch) hole pattern. There are wheels that are 5 x 5 1/2 hole patterns and that will not fit on a typical trailer spindle.

Most trailer wheels are the 5 x 4 1/2 pattern though.

Hello Poppa Clay !!

To answer your question correctly we must know the following .

1) If you hub is a 5 bolt ( what is the bolt center ?) Typically , there are 3 different sizes . A 5 bolt 4 1/2 B.C , A 5 bolt 4 3/4 B.C ( uncommon ) and there is a 5 bolt on 5 inch B.C .

2) Do you know if you have a straight spindle or is it tapered ? Is the inner and outer bearings the same or different ?

Make sure when you purchase a new hub that the center bore does NOT interfere with hole that you have in the rim .

Once you know all of these specs , it shouldnt be a problem getting back on the road .

Poppa, take it from a fellow Arkie. Take a wheel and tire with you. Good luck.

It doesn't matter if he finds it or not as the wheel itself is no longer serviceable as the bolt holes are elongated. If the tire was OK that would have been the only thing of value.

Friend of mine was towing a jeep CJ on a car dolly and ejected a rear 33" mud tire and axle shaft into a cornfield. Searched for an hour and never did find it. I'm guessing a combine eventually did find it.

Re: Help! Lost wheel

Thanks for all the replys.
I think I will spend the little extra time to take one of the other wheels and tire off to take with me. I was just trying to save an hour round trip to the nearest tire place LOL. I think by spending the time I will not have to make multiple trips due to getting the wrong one first.
The spindle and hub are in good shape. I will be replacing the lugs on the hub. I think I will take the hub with me too so I can make sure I get the correct lugs.
Thanks again for all the replys.
