Thought I would ask the experts for some help with my primitive skills.

We are trolling for cutthroat trout with leadcore line. We have been pretty productive the past couple of seasons, but last Saturday we lost a whole bunch of fish. No line breaks or knots coming undone, but the fish just jump clean off the lure hook, sometime between the bite and the time we get him to the boat. I mean we must have had 10 hookups and only got three in the boat. One of the dilemmas we have is weather we should stop trolling when we get a hookup. If we do the other lines sink to the bottom and risk getting snagged. But on the other hand, if we don't stop I don't want to put to much pressure on the fish.

Just to let you know how we do it: we put out the lure about 70 yards and then turn on the clicker and loosen up the drag just enough for the fish to be able to make it click. Is this part of the problem? When a fish jumps on, we tighten up the drag, turn off the clicker and start reeling. Do we need to set the hook and further?

1. Do we cut the motor when we get a hook up?
2. Do I have the drag thing right?
3. Do we need to set the hook after the bite?
4. How do I keep these fish on the hook?

Here’s a pic of one of the ones we were able to get in the boat last Saturday.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Maybe the fish are getting smarter? Are your hooks sharp? Maybe bent out of shape?

Either 1) the hooks not going in past the barb, or b) it's tearing out. That looks like a pretty tough-mouthed fish - but it could tear out if they're short-striking, or striking at the spinner of a spinner bait, & just get skin-hooked. Notice anything different about the ones you boated?

Not sure about the trolling deal, but, it's worth the extra money to buy good hooks. I personally like "Owner" brand hooks, but, there are others...and they are expensive for hooks.

Jtexas...how would they notice anything different about the ones they boated?

I'm curious as to what type of hooks you are using, single or multi-hook set-ups. Barb or barb-less? Also the type of lure/bait? Those trout love to throw a heavier spoon espesially if it was a "light hit."

We troll the same way with the drag set to click when the fish hit, however not so loose that he can do whatever he wants with it.

brownies, I mean like if they were hooked differently from other, more successful days...like maybe hooked in the outside part of the mouth or deeper or less deep than usual (if there is a usual), that sort of thing.

I agree with jtexas, but also just make sure that you always keep pressure on the fish. Never let the line go slack. Test your hooks by dragging the point across your fingernail. If they bite and hang up, they're sharp enough.

Re: Help!! Losing fish: UPDATE!!

Thanks, for the tips guys. We went out yesterday and had 6 hookups and got everyone inside the boat. Man, my wife handled 4 of them...ha ha. What we did different so far was to set the hook after the inital bite. The other thing we did was keep the boat moving in order to keep presure on them the hole time.

Anyway here are some questions answered.

jtexas: Hooks are sharp, brand new lures.

Jonathan Q.: Treble hooks with barbs. ProKing spoon lures.

Personally I think the hooks were not going past the barbs, thanks jtexas.

I grew up in Idaho and we trolled a fair amount, I left when we were kids so I'm not an expert... but I know that you keep constant pressure on them, and yes you need to set the hook. As for the other lines getting in the way..... reel 'em in when there is a fish on.

Thanks for the picture, nice fish!

Surf,

If you think the hook was not going past the barb, you may want to consider going with a smaller hook..
I have no idea what size you are using now, but the smaller the hook the easier it is to set in the fish's mouth...
