The engine at least one side lol - I got one side of the cowl off - looks clean and maybe maintained - the tilt and trim is a single ram with the motor mounted outside the probably inside the transom - the motor is in an up position which I will have to deal with to put it on my stand to start to see whats what with the engine. It was taken off a 16ft runabout - probably a guy just wanted speed - have the side mounted control and the dashboard with decent gauges was included trailing by the wires lol. So plan is to figure out how to set up the tilt motor on a fake transom so I can find out if the unit works. But will have to attach a battery first and see if the connections work. Going to be interesting. Just looking at trying to see if it runs etc. Just have completed tear down on my 1990 Merc 175 carb - have the powerhead all apart and going to get it evaluated - fix what needs fixing and putting it back together. The 1980 is just a fun project. Any info on the 1980 (only info was a white tag on the front of the engine saying 1980 V6 175 timining instructions. Checked the flanges and nothing will check the steering tube this afternoon. The cowl is my main problem first look says two bolts on the inside starboard rear portion or port side looking at front of engine. Thanks for any and all thoughts and or suggestions.

Thats a 2 liter 175. Dont expect it to to perform like your 1990 model. It will perform like a newer150Xr4, as it only has about 155hp at prop.

thanks that's what I thought - going to put on a stand and work through - bottom line if I get it going and checks out will put it up for sale - got to figure out the wiring first - has a weird tilt and trim unit

If the control box uses the 12 pin connecter its a 1976 or 77 model. If running and looks decent might get $1000

Nope - it's an 8 pin - worked thru the wiring tossed the console now going to pull it back out of the dumpster the gauges were decent lol - got it to turn over and the trim and tilt worked - thankfully - next going to put it on my boat and hook up the gas on muffs and see what happens. This whole scenario is crazy - my engine that I broke all the way down including powerhead looked great turned out to be the lower unit - SEI - great warranty sending it back - mean time decided since I had it in half to add new rings, rod bearings and bolts, both crankshaft seals as well as rod bearings - ordered the parts thru a guy that continues to answer his phone and help me - relationships in this age are hard to find hopefully he makes a bit off the parts but know he won't gouge me - relationship trust you scratch mine I return the favor. Buddy of mine blew his 200 - bought a bad motor out of Florida - local guy worked with him to get an engine without the stuff that should have come with it - used dressing from my buddies old motor and everything seemed fine even test run - my buddy took it out and and in blew up within 20 mins - go figure - poor guy is out 7.5K and still no motor. Difference I'm old - retired and have time and love a challenge - do my own work. Thank you for all your contributions to us wandering in the dark but trying lol. Good onya!!

Thats because they repaired the result but didn't address the cause. A good technician has to be a detective..we see the piston died but who did it?
