I have a pontoon with a 2003 60HP Johnson 4 stroke fuel injected outboard engine. I believe the engine model is j60pl4st. I want to do a complete tune up but need help as I do not see this engine as an option on iboat.com to order parts.
The oil filter is 16510-87j00
The spark plugs are NGK bpr6es

I need to know what type water pump kit will work on this engine, as I am not getting any water coming out of the "pisser hole" on the engine, it trickles out.

What spark plug wires I can order?

Also do you all know if the speedometer is ran off of the engine? I do not see any external pickup for the speedometer.

Depends on how complete you want to do your tune-up:
Engine oil and filter.
Gear oil.
Fuel filter(s)
Grease gun and grease.
Spark plugs.
Check/adjust valve lash.
If more than 200 hrs, replace cam/timing belt.
After the above (forget about spark plug leads), comes the tricky part:
Hook it up to a computer and read out the log.
Check the IAC setting and adjust if needed.
Attach the O2 sensor and re-calibrate the engine. (boat must be launced).
Re-check the IAC.
As for speedo, it is a tube built into the gearcase, the hose for attaching the speedo is just on top of the gearcase in front. If you have a speedo, attach it, if not a GPS is cheaper!!

Some parts may be sourced aftermarket, some from either Suzuki or BRP dealer.

Thank you all so much for the information.

What software would I need to read the codes off the engine and what interface?
Also I want to take down my lower drive to replace the water pump assembly and any information on doing such would be greatly appreciated.
Also is there oil in the lower unit? I would assume so and if you can guide me on how to change this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Help: Johnson 60HP 4 stroke fuel Injected TUNE UP

Can anyone tell me what type of oil I can use in the lower drive unit (believe that is what its called). It's the unit where the prop is located there are two holes one for the oil drain and the top for the air relief.
Is it ok to fill the oil from the top hole?

THanks in advance.

You may use any EP 90 outboard gear oil. Common name is 'Hi Vis', Ultra HPF ...
You MUST fill from bottom hole and vent out the upper. Keep the leg vertical!!

Any advice on replacing the spark plug wires? Do they sell the kit specific to this engine or do I have to buy generic and make the ends myself?

Re: Help: Johnson 60HP 4 stroke fuel Injected TUNE UP

I have the exact motor. I use Evinrude/Johnson HPF XR synthetic blend gearcase oil. That's what's been in it since new. The bottom screw is for draining and filling. Take the bottom screwe out first and then the top screw to drain. By taking out the top screw, it will drain faster. Get a pump that screws on the gear oil bottle and screw the other end into the bottom hole of the gearcase. Stop pumping when the oil comes out the top hole. Put the top screw back in. Unscrew the pump from the gearcase and "quickly" put the bottom screw in.

When draining, look at the oil for any metal specs or moisture. If there is a fair amount of moisture in the gearcase, the oil will look milky. If it is milky, you'll probably want to reseal the lower unit.

There are 2 fuel filters. Yes, the powerhead is Suzuki.

You should be able to buy plug wires at your Johnson/Evinrude dealer. They just may have to order them... The wires may be part of the coils. I see there are wire clips at that coils. Not going to try and take it apart to see if the wires can be seperated from the coils....

ps. If you're getting very little or no water coming out of your telltale, it just could be plugged. You can blow air back thru it. The main thing is you have water dumping out your hub(center of the prop).

Re: Help: Johnson 60HP 4 stroke fuel Injected TUNE UP

You guys on this forum is the best. I pulled the lower unit this weekend and it looks really good in there. I then hooked up my water line to the flush port of the engine and got a trickle out of the "telltale" and then out of the many other outlets. I believe there was only trickle this time as the pump was not engaged (did not start engine) to get the pressure.
I can get the oil filter and plugs from iboat.com. however I was thinking of using the valvoline 80W90 synthetic gear oil from my local autozone. Any see any issue with this?

If changing plug leads, stay with original. Each 'part' of any electronic ignition system must be according to spec or you may risk the whole function and safety of the system.
Stay with an Outboard Gear Oil (EP90), preferably Ultra HPF which is the BPR recommended. In case of water intrusion into the gear case, they handle humidity far better than auto oils.

^^^^ I agree. Stick with OE parts especially with the electrical system. I learned the hard way on a snowmobile and bought an aftermarket coil. Didn't even last 1 ride. OE is a little more spendy, but more than worth it in the long haul...

Sounds like your tell tale is either plugged up or has prostrat probs. Run a wire up it or try blowing it out with compressed air and then put the water to it.

Any suggestions on the Outboard Gear Oil, Mallory, Sierra, or Star Brite?
Can I also just switch from regular to synthetic, any flush needed?

Re: Help: Johnson 60HP 4 stroke fuel Injected TUNE UP

You can switch oils in the lower unit as well as the engine at will. Just avoid mixing either oil with another brand/type. Sometimes the additives don't like each other. Valve lash is not something you want to attempt as it involves pulling the valve cover. You can "check" the clearance, but any adjustment requires removal and insertion of shims. The service manual for your engine has specific tables covering this. As I remember the Suzy/Johnsons do not have a timing belt. They have a timing chain. You sholdn't need plug wires but if it makes you feel good, get them at the Suzuki dealer -- the engines are the same just a different color. Oil and plugs can come from your local auto store. NAPA can very likely get the filter for you as well. Any marine dealer in your area that sells Suzuki would also have what you need. But of course, IBOATS is always the first stop and since they provide this fine forum give them your business.

The 60/70 Johnson/Suzuki have timing belt and not chain and the valve adjustment is by the old 'screw and nut' type and not shim. It is recommended to use a synthetic oil (Ultra HPF) in the lower and not the old type Hi-Vis.

They also recommend Ultra 4 stroke synthetic blend oil for the crankcase. I would stick with the synthetics they recommend if it were me. I do.......
