I have a 1972 25Hp evinrude model#25202. I am looking for a new forward gear. All I seem to find is a complete set, but I only need a forwaqrd gear. Also what years are the same as my 72. I might me able to get a forward gear from 1975 up. will they work.

Hello.
You might be a lot cheaper off buying a lower unit for your engine at e-bay.Those forward gears on their own are really up there.Besides, there is a real possibility that there is more not so obvious damage in the lower unit, which will become very obvious the moment you put a gear in there that has no wear on it at all.

Hi geofisherman

I do not thing the 1975 will work. Single gears and clutch dogs should ba available at any authorised dealer. Price around 75 $ for dog, 100 for gears here. Try to call another dealer. Reverse and forward gears can be swapped as far as I remember.

Hi geo...

Papasage is correct on the recut. I have seen this done and it works. However, the cuts must be exactly 180 degrees so the machinist must be a good one. Just took a look at gear cost...Forward gear and bearing...$236 OEM price. Maybe the machinist is the way to go.
