Help interpreting instructions #6 manual (Alpha One)

Look at page 3A-19 if you don't mind and read the section titled "U-JOINT ASSEMBLY-SETTING PINION BEARING PRELOAD."

My drive HAS the small spacer "h". It certainly looks to me that all you have to do the set the preload WITH spacer is just torque down the pinion nut to 70-80 lbs-ft, in other words, no monkeying around with the precision inch-pound torque wrench.

Those that do not have the small spacer "h," have to do the procedure using the inch-pound torque wrench.

Am I reading this right? I know this is an extra-super crucial step, so I'm just looking for confirmation.

you are correct . Gearsets that use the inner spacer are torqued,new style gear sets say to discard the inner ring and use "rolling torque" method.I have found that if you use the inner ring with the new style you can just torque them like the old style.

yes, i think your reading it correct. i had the small spacer in my 1 drive. i used the torque it down method. so far w/o ramifications. over 1 year use. many hours.

that said. looks like ya got a 87 aplha1. i woulda thought that by then (1987) you'd have not found that small spacer... i don't know which is correct for your drive. my old 1 drive. i expected to see the small spacer and i did...

looks like bd answered both questions before i could type what i had to say up.. he's pretty fast....

personally I'd torque it, but then check it to make sure the bearings are not to tight or to loose.
