Ok, I just had my boat transom repaired and the boat re-painted. I no longer had holes to mount it so i drilled new ones and now everything is ready for the bolts but before I do I have a question. How should i seal the holes? Leakage is NOT an option, I'm not going to have a water-soaked transom again so how do i preven it? what is the best way to seal the holes i just drilled in the transom? The repair guy said just to use silicone, is this enough? I'm not taking any chances, What do you guys do and what are my options, TIA.(btw its a 15' checkmate with a 135 johnson on it.)

use 3M fast cure 5200 adhesive sealant...it's as much of an adhesive as a sealant..I've glued hurricane damaged sailboats back together with it !!

Just be aware that if you ever try to remove the engine for any reason the 5200 sticks so well you will most likely peel fiberglass or at best have to pry the motor loose.

Something to think about......

I wondered about that, what do most marinas or manufacturers use? is there a common method or material? I noticed on the 3m website that there is a 4200 that may be a better option.

Coat the bolt shanks with clear silicone before installing ,slicone the back of the transom bolt washers, and backfill the bolthole voids level full and you'll be good to go.That is standard installation procedure at the local John/Rude dealer.

Re: HELP, info on mounting an outboard

over time, the silicone will loosen at the edges and will eventually peel.we've used the 5200 for years and have removed engines mounted with 5200 and have yet to see the 5200 do ANY fiberglass damage.the damage is usually done by impatience...sure it is hard to remove but the edges don't peel over time and thus no water penetration

Make sure that the motor is perfectly centered on the transom. 1/8" either way can make your boat ride funny.

Ive always used RTV, and never had any problems, and I use the big flat washers inside with the gooey stuff on the backs of them.

Re: HELP, info on mounting an outboard

The 5200 silicone is the best. In the old days we used to put it all over the bolts plus the transom. After you have your holes drilled take the silicone and put a good circle of it around 1/8 inch of each hole and use factory washers bolts. When you mount the engine (as was said) try not to let it smear, although it will a little no matter what you do. And you will be fine. Ive seen some mechanics put some on the inside of the transom but that is idiotic considering if it gets there then whats the point....i guess they think backwash on sudden stops will contaminate the inside but I do not reccomend it plus it looks bad. I have never seen a boat in the last 15 years where I have done this have problems due to silicone installation. Good luck
