Help! I'm running out of parts to throw at it...!

1985 Merc 90 inline6. Started running bad - missing fouling plugs.

I rebuilt the carbs, replaced trigger, replaced both ign boxes with new cdi, new rectifier. Still runs like poo. If I disconnect the rectifier, it runs great and goes like a scalded dog - better than if ever has in my memory. Does this mean I have a stator issue, or is there still some other potential gremlin? So far the only part we replaced that I don't think we needed was the trigger, but I want to be sure before coughing up for a stator.

A good manual for the motor cost a lot less than some of the parts, and is a wise investment if you plan on working on the motor. It will also tell you how to test the stator, coils, and rectifier. Testing will be a lot cheaper than just throwing parts at it that is not causing the trouble. JMO

Maybe the rectifier is shorted to ground?
