I'm having a hard time find the correct replacement stator for my motor. I have a 1991 mercury 90hp serial number 0D028331.

I've been to multiple sites and have come up with about four different part numbers with a mixture of 9amp and 16amp.

i've got 4 merc parts list for that serial number and all 4 show same stator.. part #

398-832075A5

some sites will give a "range" of sorts but those include superceded numbers that all point to same part.................. ie: 832075A5 < 9710A30

When I search that, it comes up with a 16amp red stator. The one on my motor is black, doesnt that mean it's a 9amp? Also the wires dont match up. I have one red, one blue, two yellow, and one black. I read on cdi aftermarket replacements instead of a black wire you'll have two wires red/white and blue/white that act as the black ground. How do I know which aftermarket stator is correct?

never used anything CDI.. color doesn't mean anything amperage.. i do know that tha "ONLY BLACK COLOR " with merc, oem and /or aftermarket is a ground.. at no time will you use a red, blue anything other than black as a ground.. after market part/number should show oem number that its compatible with.....

Here is the stator that comes up on cdi electronics website when I search by motor.

like said, never used cdi anything myself.... sooooooo its up to you.. i did find that pro marine shows it to be a #174-1778

reading tha stuff i see why they are grounding those two "colored" wires.. its to make that stator work on other motors..... one stator with different motor applications..... tha beauty of after market stuff!..

On the part 398-832075a5 they have 4 wires (2 yellow, 1 green, 1 white) whereas the one on my motor has 5 wires (2 yellow, 1 red, 1 blue, 1 black) and I see on the oem version, there is an adapter included 834949a3. Essentially, could I get an aftermarket and buy this adapter to fit an aftermarket stator? Are there instructions for hooking up this adapter?
