I am new to boating. My wife and I are thinking about purchasing a used pontoon boat with a 40 HP Nissan outboard. I am having trouble finding good information on the motor. Can anyone identify this motor from the picture I have attached? I believe it may be a 1998 model. Also, it has P.L.U.S. on the housing. Is that Nissan's oil injection technology?

Thank you for any help,

Todd

Re: Help Identifying Motor - Nissan 40

Year of manufacture is not something that Nissan/Tohatsu typically uses to identify and service motors. Rather, date of sale is used to determine warranty period. Yours is no longer in warranty ;-)

For parts and service, you want the precise model from the sticker on the lower cowling, which can span more than one year of manufacture. Should read something like NS40D. That lable will also have the serial number. If you really want the precise model year, you can call the Nissan office, or send them an email from the website http://www.nissanmarine.com/

Paul,

Thank you for the information. I meant to get the numbers off the motor when we took a look at it the other day and forgot. The marina that took the boat on trade wasn't familiar with Nissan motors and couldn't tell me much about them. When I checked the web for information it seemed as if the PLUS motors have oil injection but the salesman thought I would have to mix the oil and gas myself.
