Hello,

I'm inquiring to find out the starter and consequently motor that is on my boat. Went through some steps at marinshopen.se and tracked back some old threads and its turning out to be more difficult than I expected.

The serial number is 0B363714. The motor is a Mercury 2.4L 200hp. The I unaware of the year of this motor but believe it was made between 1985-1995. Doesn't help much.

My short-term goal is to identifying the starter to purchase a replacement. So if the motor cannot be identified can someone help me identify the correct starter for purchase? I have attached a picture. I have pulled off the starter and there are not any part numbers on the actual motor. I have a list of a couple part numbers that I could locate attached to the starter.

76866 Starter bracket (lower)
56703 Collar, Rubber Starter Motor Mount.

Thank you for your help.

If you look here almost right behind tha bend of tha advance timing arm on tha block, base of number two cylinder, you will find a build date stamped on tha block. Will be 1/8" numbers. m/d/yr. Might be kinda hard ta see with paint but its there.

Thank you both for your help!

Sorry for the slow reply. I wanted to reply with some new information from my end First off, I was able to locate the starter that I needed for replacement. Instead of rebuilding, I went ahead and bought an aftermarket starter for $60. After using the information provided from you folks, I found the part number to be 77141 which seems to cover many other numbers as well. It fit perfectly and fixed the issues I was having.

On another note, I believe I found the number posted on the block. This number was (A 90389) which I translated into September 3rd, 1989. This date contradicts the 1988 year that was provided by the hull and here is why I believe so and I was wondering for your guys' input because I am looking at getting a service manual.

The history of this boat and motor was worked through on a thread I posted when I joined this site. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...ercury-xr4-black-max-150-upgrade-capabilities

Basically, I bought the motor as a 150hp Black Max XR4 (date unknown). The motor was a mess and needed rebuilt. Anyways, my mechanic was able to find an entire motor to do the rebuild , which was actually more like using the newly bought motor and using my blown up motor for as a donor. Wired247, you were very active and helpful in the previous post working through that with me. Saying that I would need "200HP block, 200 HP carbs and a 200 HP reed block set. Basically, in your case you with your bad everything else you would need a 200 hp donor long block" (wired247)

Anyways, I believe he used all of those parts from the new motor that he purchased. My whole reason for stating all of the history of this is because I would like to know if possibly the serial number I gave does match to a 1988 150hp XR4 and, due to the donor motor rebuild, I actually have a 200hp something else? Is there any way that I could figure this out. Obviously, I would have liked what my mechanic said to be correct and this is be a 200hp motor, however, the correct service manual would help me gravely in being able to fix some issues with the trim I am currently having.

I would also like to add that my mechanic had to by a new cowl for the motor as the original Cowl that said 150hp Black Max Oil Injected, now is a different cowl, because the old cowl would no longer fit after the "rebuild".

If any pictures would help for identification, please let me know what types of pictures I could take to help aid the process. I appreciate everyones help and previous help.

There is only one undisputed way ta tell if serial numbers are a problem. Pull one of tha heads and see if it is steel sleeve or chrome bore motor. 200/175 will be chrome unless its had work done somewhere down tha line. 200 will be horizontal reed and 175 will be vertical. A combination of both indicates it was 175/200 ta start with. Does tha "donor" motor have a number stamped in tha welsh plug? If that is tha build date all paper work will show it as a '90 model if it was bought as a complete motor originally.....From what your describing you still have "clam shell" type cowls. Those went away in late '89. There are two types of those. One for tha vertical reed motor and one for tha horizontal. Tha only difference is tha way tha front is cut and tha latching system........Your mechanic should know all this. Especially if there's any rebuild involved......

Oh yeah, the 3 ram trim is pretty generic with all tha '80's models V6. As far as trim goes tha serial number on tha clamp bracket will work......
