Hi guys.
Please take a look at this ebay listing.
Does this motor look to be a 1997 125 hp?

I could really use it if it is, but have some concerns that it may not be what is claimed.

Have emailed the seller for the numbers, but have not heard from him yet.

Look at the ....
decals,
trim unit
coils,
fuel pump,
top cowl,
switchbox.

If you think its something different, what do you think it is?

Thanks for your input.

Re: Help id motor, with photos

It is certainly a Force block and appears 1994 or later since it has Mercury ignition, flywheel, and transom mount clamps. The hood is a Force hood but decals? I don't know. Would the P.O. have applied Mercury decals?

There are some anomalies though. The fuel pump is Chrysler/Force, not the square Mercury unit and the power tilt/trim appears to be the Chrysler/Force pentagon, five bolt unit. The transom clamps do not have the late model through the pivot pin steering cable but still use separate holes in the clamps.

Photos are not large enough to see the lower unit and tell if it is Force or Mercury. But it does appear to have the Force rear shroud, lower cowling, kingpin, and pivot yoke. I'm trying to remember if Merc changed that when they changed to the Merc lower unit and midleg.

94 or later? Maybe. As late as 97? Not sure, but I don't think so. I would expect a 97 to have Mercury single ram power trim/tilt.

I looked at the ad, it seems to be a re-stickered Force, but I also looked at this sellers feedback. There are two negative comments posted recently on a 125 hp motor sale. Seems like a bad idea to get involved, unless you can drive to his place and look him in the eye....

Well, my thoughts exactly.
I was kind of playing dumb here to get input from you all.
A Merc would be oil injected.
That fuel pump wasn't used after early 93.
The old style switchbox also.
A 97 would have been CDM without a switchbox.
And correct on the trim ram also.
I was thinking it was a 92-93 120 Force.

Finally got an answer from the guy about an hour ago.

He says: "i dont have the id tag when the lower unit got replaced it never got put on the new one this is the way i got it i dont know much about boats "

Some people. :(

Gonna give him ell.

Well, sent him this:
You have a 1992 Force 120, made by Brunswick
Corporation, as it can be id'd by the block, the flywheel,
the waterjacket, top cowl, and the trim ram.

That combination of 2-stage fuel pump, terminal screw
switchbox, and coils, were only used in 1992.

A Mercury model would have been oil injected.
The decals are all wrong.
The motor is a counterfeit.

Got this in return:

"then why do all the parts on it say mercury i will put money on that it not a 92"

Just sent him this:

Because Brunswick used surplus Mercury starters, lower units, switch boxes, and coils to build the engines. They also used the old Chrysler block, 2 stage fuel pump, and trim units.

By 1995 all the Mercs used cdm ignitions and were oil injected.

Even the 1996 Force motors were using cdm ignitions by then, along with Mercury tilt n trim units.

Been wrenching on these motors for 25 years, I think I can recognize one.

Take it to any Mercury service department and let them tell you.

Or shall we meet at Badger Marine, saturday, 10 am at the parts counter.
$300 wager says its a Force, 92 or 93, 120 hp.

Bring cash, ask fro ED.

Now he has ended the auction. :(

I had messaged him as well and told him what he has. I think he may actually relist it with the correct information. He seems to have been snowed by who he bought it from and was not intentionally trying to scam anyone.
