Help !! I See Smoke !!!

First I would like to say Hello and any help would be greatly appreciated. I own a 1982 sea ray cutty cruiser with a 350 CID 260 HP mercruiser. I purchased the boat in 1998 with roughly 450 hrs on it. The boat ran fine and in the summer of 2000 I felt it ran a little hot so I changed the risers and manifolds. Unknowingly I was never given the blocking plates that go between the elbow and the exhaust manifold causing the boat to run cold. In 2001 my bilge pump failed causing rain water to rise up to the timing cover. I pumped out the water, ran the boat and the oil looked like milkshake. I changed the oil three times and to no avail it continued to look like milkshake. At that point I drained the block, refilled it with antifreeze and the boat sat from then until now unused. I decided to put the boat back in the water this summer so I changed the oil, cleaned the carb, gave it a full tune up, replaced the pump in the outdrive, new gear lube, replaced the gaskets between the elbow and the manifold blocking plate included. The boat seems to run ok, a little rough. I tuned the carb as best I could however, when the engine reaches running temp I see a fine smoke or steam coming out of the PCV grommets on the valve covers. Almost sure the oil level on the dip stick was rising. I drained some of the oil to bring it back down to the correct level. Although it doesn?t look like milkshake it does look thin. I?ve asked a few mechanics what could this be and what course of action needs to be taken. Some people are telling me its ?head gaskets?, some are telling me its ?intake manifold gaskets?, some are telling me its ?blowby? and some are telling me its ?heads?. It seems like everyone I talk to is giving me a different answer. Can anyone help?

Well it could be exhaust due to Blow by or the valve train. Or it could be steam because water is getting in because of a bad gasket. If you oil level is going up I would start by pressure testing the cooling system to see if you are indeed leaking, and a compression test will tell you if its blow by, both need done while engine is warm. Tell us the numbers you get and we can help you figure out what to do.

No you just have to isolate the engine from water intake and exit. I would do a search in the forum for pressure testing cooling system. I am sure there are instructions on the forum, if you hav the manual it may be in there.

Most of the answers you are getting are right....It could be any of those things.

If the oil is thinning, and not foamy I would suspect gas instead of water. Leaky needle on the carb can run a lot of extra gas into the intake which makes its way to the crankcase.

When I replaced the manifold on my 120HP, I had to run it 2 hrs at 3700 RPM to boil the water out of the oil. I then changed it again.

Run a compression test on all 4 cyl. Make sure you have water for the drive impeller while cranking.

Make sure it is tuned up, make sure there is no milkshake, and run it a while. Blowby is most likely the result from flash rust from it sitting with water in the oil.

sounds like you popped a head gasket if you have steam coming out. dont run it or youll hrdro a cylinder and blow it up.

To check for fuel in the oil use your nose. Gasoline smell is very obvious. & if it's not a milkshake anymore you are making progress. To get all the moisture out it needs to run at normal temp for a couple of real outings. Hook up the hoses from the grommets to the flame arrestor if that is your setup. It's old school crankcase ventilation without a pcv valve.
If you suspect there is blowby you might try some of that ring seat repair witches brew at the auto parts stores. I personally like Seafoam. Just change the oil right away afterward.
