Bad day today... i have a 20' alumaweld intruder 201 on a single axle rogue trailer...I lost the bearing on the trailer today and screwed up the spindle when it hit the pavement...it will require a new axle... Trailer is a 1996 with the old style torsion suspension.. i have felt for a long time boat is pushing limit of trailer capacity especially when i add camping gear inside it. a new axle will run about $500.00... anyone know what a single axle galvanized trailer with a new axle will most likely fetch on the market.. i am seriously thinking of going with a tandem axle trailer... anyone have a good tandem for sale.. All replies welcome at this point......Thanx...Dutch harbor

Re: HELP.......I lost a bearing on rogue trailer

Is the axle chewed up real bad or did the nut take most of the grinding? Why not just buy a spindle from Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware and have the spindle replaced? You can usually pick up a hub assembly with spindle, hub, bearings and a seal for $100 or less. It is not really much labor to have the spindle replaced. Can you post pics of the damage to the spindle? It may still be mechanicly sound. Don't always think "replace the axle" just because the bearing came loose. I have lost a wheel or 3 in my day and have only had 1 spindle actually get any damage. Most times the nut catches hell.

Ouch! So 250 for parts and 250 for labor?

WALT...thanx for the reply but the torsion assembly is all one unit to the axel..so im told by alumaweld ie rogue trailer that the whole axle needs to be replaced...they have changed the design on the suspension and the new axles allow for the replacement of individual spindles...but thats $500 bucks for the whols axle and bearings ready for tires.. my question was... am i money ahead to buy the new axle and then sell the trailer or just purchase a tandem axle.. i was wondering what a single axle trailer with new axle goes for on the used market...would it be worth putting another axle on that trailer and making it a tandem. It appears the only damage is to the threads where the nut holds the bearing in place...is it posible to rethread the thread. if that wont take due to to much damage is it posible to rethread to a different size nut.. how about double nutting the bearing buddy has more than enough room to fit two nuts on the spindle to hold it into place.. would that be possible for a quick fix just to get the boat home off the roadway without having to hire tow service...rogue trailer is shut down for three weeks for maintenence so it will be at least that long until i can get a new axle..

If the diameter is 75% or better I would touch it up with a thread file and keep running it. Double nutting it will definitely help keep everything together. The spindle can be replaced on any axle. It does not have to be from Rouge. Any good welding shop can replace the spindle. If there are any trucking companies in the area, check with them and see who they get to repair their spindles. I used to deal with a company in Florida that would weld, machine and thread spindles on trailers (18 wheeler type). It is possible to either build up the damaged area and rethread it or have the diameter reduced and rethreaded for another nut. Oh yeah, if you go to double nut it use a washer in between the nuts. Adjust the bearings with the inner nut, install cotter pin, install washer, and crank down on the outer nut.
