Ok so my dad bought this 29ft regal in the harbor from one of his buddies that knows nothing about boats. So I decided to start digging into it and making sure its sea worthy I found out that I have the XDP out drive that have this partial recall on them. So basically Volvo sold a crap product and is giving a 40% discount on the parts to upgrade them. The cost will be over 15K with 2 out drives to replace and the labor to do them.. I was wondering if anyone has any other alternatives to this fix. Or is there another post I can follow to educate myself on how to fix this or just replace them when they go bad? All the help I can get is much appreciated..THANKS !

Never had one but from reading here is my best answer.
From what i understand the real problem was the drive shaft bellows were made to small and would constantly get a hole rubbed in it from the water hose and u-joints. I believe VP solved this problem but it was to little to late as the damage had been done to that drives reputation.
I would check and see if you have a later drive or a early drive.
If later model i would probably just do the normal maintenance for that drive and run it. After all its all ready been this long so probably ok.
If a early model i would update them to the later design if possible.

So after reading about this drive it looks like the problem is that the driving be is made out of plastic and when the lower unit starts to have corrosion it breaks the plastic. And the drive is toast. So maybe the best cheapest fix is just replacing the lower unit where the corrosion builds.

Don't know where you got that info but it's all wrong.
1. I am pretty sure that Volvo discount for upgrade is far gone. XDP Upgrade Promotion (ends 7/31/14)

2. The issues with the XDP is the bellows. When trimmed up the u-joints rub on the bellows and creates a hole. Some people have no problems with them.
The XDP's with the 8.1 engines have the same issue along with cracking of the gimble housing because of the torque.

Bellows failures are most likely to occur in heavy boats equipped with twin 5.70SXi or 8.10Si engines, where excess torque is created in the drive area during high-speed or high-load turns. Abrasion of the bellows can cause water entry and possible
corrosion of the U-joint and gimbal bearing,
Just use them and careful not to trim to high while running. They might last a long time Upgrade is around $10-15000 per engine
