help!!! how do i get the tru course steering cable out

i know how to get the cable off the steering wheel but how do i remove from the rear of the boat is there special tool i need or what do i take that little gear off please explain its really hard to steer when in the water

is the shaft supposed to just slide out???

remove outdrive, remove hairpin and plastic cover from rear steering drum assy, get someone to turn steering wheel until a screw (slot) comes around on the drum. remove screw, slide shaft out the back of the boat watching the order of the wave washer and maybe a nylon washer - need to go back as they were

don't overtighten that screw at reassembly - be aware it is threading into aluminum - I use a drop of blue loctite - not red
