Hello wise boaters, i am a new user to this forum. i want to first thank you for showering me with valueable information about boating. and also preventing me from buying a 91 23' bayliner trophy walk around cuddy with a pair of 120 force outboards.asking 8500.

i am thinking of going with a 1984 chaparral walk around 23' cuddy cabin with a pair of 1988 yamaha 4 cylinder 130. asking 6900.nego.

my question is, the lower unit on both of the engines looks bad. welded up around the area where the prop is attached to the lower unit. it has been welded in the past and it looks like it has cracked again. also one of the engines has a oil stuff leaking from the prop shaft. the sales guy said it can be welded, but have to be careful cause it might mess up seal. and the skeg is broken too. (A MESS)!!!!

my question is. 1. what is that oil leaking from the lower unit behind the prop? is it normal? 2. is it fixable? 3. can you tell me about the chaparral cuddy WA.? is it a good hull? 4. how can i inspect and tell if the fiberglass and hull is still good?

this is at a dealership and they say the engines been serviced there. but how do i make sure they are not just blowing smoke to get a sale!

please help... i am a boater that has sold his last boat and am looking to get another one... ASAP... HELP. your information will be greatly appreciated.

BBQ,

You were saved from the first one, don't fall into the second. The engines you're looking at have obviously been subject to some SEVERE galvanic action.

Once a problem like corosion gets to the sealing or bearing carrying surfaces you're getting into trouble.

Cosmetic is one thing, leaking lower units around the corosion is another.

If the dealer is "reputable" they're hard to find. Ask them to warrant it-they won't.

Keep looking.

capt. JOHN.
thank you for the quick reply. i guess my desperation to get back on the waters has blurred my thinking. yes, i had a weird gut feeling when the sales guy said it was nothing major and that it can be welded.

another question. if the motor is good and hull is good as well. do you think that is a good buy? for lets say...around 5000 and then find a re-manufactured lower units. or should i just walk away and be patient.!

i think i already know what you probably would say. thanks a bunch, you just tipped the scale towards.... walking away.

thanks a bunch,

stranded on land!

BBQ,

Don't know anything about Chap' hulls. Forget the engines unless you have them compression checked. Even at that, the galvanic action goes DEEP.

Take this from a guy that actually "enjoys" restoring older rigs. I know it's a sickness.

Look for a rig that has sat for a long time and shows little signs of use-not abuse.

Trying to fix abuse and neglect are far more difficult than rstoring simply older age.

Don't want to scare you off, but I've been there and done what you want to do.

If you are not handy, and it can't be in your backyard, you are going to pay big $$$ to have someone put a rig back into good service.

Be patient!
