HELP: Frozen carb bypass covers!

I'm rebuilding my 3 V6 carbs and I can't get the brass bypass covers off. They are frozen solid. I have new ones in the rebuild kit, so I'd really like to get under them and clean.

They are brass with a huge slot (approx twice the size of a standard flat blade screw driver). However, even after carb cleaner, WD40, a little heating, they are so stuck that the brass deforms along the slot instead of the threads breaking loose.

I didn't heat the covers too much (body warm, brass just bearly hot enough to touch for a few seconds). I'm scared of damaging the carb with too much heat. Is that a serious concern?

Any advice would be most welcome!
Thanks
Brian Atkins

--------------------
Brian Atkins
1989 Baja Sunsport 186/Yamaha ProV 150
(zoom zoom)

Since you have a replacement, can you file down two sides of the screw (making two parallel flat sides) and use a wrench to get it off?

Re: HELP: Frozen carb bypass covers!

Couldn't do that, the cover is flush with the casing.

I was actually able to remove them with some slight taps with a hammer at one edge of the slot with carb in a vise (scary!). I padded the jaws, but even so it was not fun!
