HELP, first time boat owner

hi, need some help, we are first time boat owners, have mercury i/o motor 165 h.p., think year is 1980. first question, can someone tell me where serial no. is? second, when we put the earmuff on and attach water hose, water comes out center of prop, is this correct. thank you

Hello Caboot,<br />Yes it's normal for water to come out of the center of the prop, it exits with the exaust.<br />There are two serial numbers that you might need one is on the outdrive, I think usually on the port side. The other is on the engine, on the valve cover or close by.<br />Good luck

the engine ser. # is located aft of the starter and up a few inches .where the flywheel hsg. meets the block, it is a metal tag riveted to the block,and also the valve cover may have it,if the valve cover has the # verify with the # by the starter.

thanks guys, for the reply, we took it out today for the first time, and didn't get 50ft. from the ramp when she quit, had to be towed in ALREADY. it started knocking,smoking, bogging out, gas fumes glore. but we made it back now to find out the problem, some say either the carb,or timming,or who knows. thanks
