help finding year model for mercury

I have a merc 125 thunderbolt i found 2 #'s they are 846-3181 on the side of the motor and 2396222 on the mount where it hooks on the boat. and can you tell me if this is a good motor. please help i am new to working on boat motors thank you crackerjack

Hi CJ,<br /> Your motor is a 1968 model. The 6-cylinder Mercs were good motors - a good design that they built in one form or another for over 30 years, although I know there were a couple of years where the magnetos could be troublesome - not sure when.<br /> Lots of stuff out there for older Mercs - start at www.oldmercs.com for manuals, etc.<br />- Scott
