Re: help finding modle #

Most sites will require year, make, engine size (ie: 5.0 Liter), 2 bbl or 4 bbl carb, and type of outdrive (ie: Cobra, King Cobra, Stinger, etc). I believe OMC had (4) models utilizing the 5.0 GM powerplant in 1988. The model numbers were 502AMLGDP, 502APRGDP, 504AMLGDP, and 504APRGDP. The first two model #'s had 2 bbl carbs and the 2nd two model #'s had 4 bbl carbs. I'm fairly certain that all 4 models utilized the Cobra outdrive.

Howdy, and Welcome aboard.

You can probably just replace the alternator (or pull your alt and have it rebuilt) The regulator is usually inside the alt.

Forget about the trim switch. (on the throttle control right?) You'll probably need to just replace the entire control. Your throttle quadrant is possibly more than 20 years old. OMC went out of business more than 10 years ago.

If there's no model number on the engine it's either worn off or someone replaced the engine and didn't keep the old model numbers intact.

I have a 1987 Four Winns 211 Liberator. It came with an OMC engine, drive and controls. While I could have used the OMC control with the engine and drive I replaced the OMC with, I pulled it and threw it away.

I bought one of these: http://www.teleflexmarine.com/produ...anical-dual-action/ch1700-side-mount-control/

As quirky as the OMC Cobras are, you NEED to have good positive control of the shift system. If the shift quadrant/controls are that old and even a little questionable, I would replace them.

For identification,go to http://epc.brp.com to find model numbers (you can leave the email blank) click the drop down menu and select "Sterndrive" and find your year model. there'll be several model numbers but things like alternators are probably the same for all.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: help finding modle #

I've attached a breakdown of the model numbers so that you can determine your's. As Rick mentioned, the main parts will likely be all the same. The primary differences between the 4 models will be 2 bbl vs 4 bbl carb, and the prop rotation.

Well, it's hard to tell from your picture.

But if I had to guess, would say it's the ESA module.

In 1988, there were 4 models (Bridar indicated above) . ALL of them used the alternator in the pic below.
#24 is the voltage regulator

It's a pretty standard alternator. The alternator that came off my previously installed 1987 460 King Cobra, fits on my 1997 Mercruiser 454.

It's also possible that if it's original, it could be a 1987 model too (boat builders frequently do this) In that case, the OMC part number for the alt might be different but either one would probably work. (87 was a Motorola or equiv alternator)

Oh,

There's no reason you couldn't put a spring loaded center-off double-pole, double throw switch anywhere you wanted to put it and it would still work.

It's just that it's FAR easier to use with the throttle hand since it should be readjusted every time you move the throttle.

That regulator by the way is OMC #985713 http://www.sterndrive.info/voltage_regulators.html you can buy it in a variety of places on the net, ebay etc.....

I would just replace the alternator though assuming it's really "bad".

alright. the volt guage was pined all the way at 16 last time i was out and theboat started dieing unless i was just going 4-5 mph. the volt regulator would be the only thing to couse that right?
either way il take the alt to get tested.
