I recently bought a 1997 Bass Tracker Pro Team 17 with Tracker (Mercury) 40hp motor. It supposedly has "low mileage" on it and appears to be in terrific condition with, indeed, low mileage based on looking at the prop and overall condition. This boat ran flawlessly for five half day trips but yesterday, within about a minute of initial startup, I heard a loud continuous buzz. I finally decided to proceed and see if it would go away. I motored maybe a minute to the destination and turned the key off like normal. The loud buzz continued even with the key off! I fiddled with the key and I think it was when I turned it to "on" the buzz stopped. I seem to recall that the buzz returned when I turned the key off, or maybe it was back to on. Whatever, it finally went away. I went ahead and fished an hour, cranked the motor, and it ran flawlessly.
Since it's 18 years old, this concerns me. What could this be? Could this have anything to do with the oil injection system? Not having oil being put into the fuel worries me, as that could be catastrophic. I'm scared to run it again. The only reason I even bring up the oil injector is because the seller mentioned the oil injection system and that if I did not trust it, I could unhook the injector and just mix my oil/gas the old way, prior to filling the gas tank. So, I'm thinking, hmmm, why did he tell me that? He showed me a mark he made with his Sharpie pen on the oil reservoir so that he could tell if the oil injector was, indeed, putting oil into the engine. And it did go down, so, he surmised that all is well. I think he did that twice, testing it prior to selling.
The boat has two new batteries, one for the engine, one for trolling.
