My Lark 40 died, and I got a good deal for a Sea King 40 that runs great. I'm good with cars, trucks, and tractors, but I don't quite understand the wiring on these motors. I do have a manual, but the wiring diagram doesn't fit. I really just need to know about the kill wire, my electric choke works, and the motors starts, I just can't shut it off with the keyswitch. Also my lights don't have power. The guy I bought the motor from said it was an electric shift, will this cause a problem? And this motor looks exactly like my Lark, just a different name. Anything else I need to know? I'd like to make sure my battery is charging as well.

Thanks for any help,

if it is electric shift you will need the correct control box to make it shift. At least if it is like to old Johnson evinrude electric shifts

To be sure what motor you have we need the model number.
I'm guessing but I don't think Sea King had electric shift.
If it is electric it will have a slim pointed gearcase.
Manual shift is blunter and fatter and has a seam so you can remove the lower half of the gearcase.
As near as I can tell the kill switch wire is black. It may be connected to another black wire at the cutout switch.
The way it works is it shorts the points to ground to stop the motor.Similar to a lawnmower motor.

if it has a shift lever on the motor it is probably not an electric shift. though I don't know all the electric shift motor out there
