New motor for me. Can anyone point me to some threads or a link that explain how to drop the lower unit, change the impeller, put in a new water pump kit, and then re-install the lower unit? I have the OMC Factory service manual. It explains how to put in a water pump kit and impeller, but as far as I can see, it doesn't explain how to drop the lower unit. It assumes I know how to drop the lower unit and reinstall it. I don't.

I've seen some references for other motors about having to detach a rod coming down from above. Is this the same case, and how to I do this?

Thanks in advance. I have to avoid paying shop fees if I can.

Excellent link! Now I get it. I just needed to visualize everything in my head. Definitely a 2-person job getting it back on.

The last thing I'm not certain of......is there a gasket on top of the lower unit that gets replaced?

When doing this water pump kit, should I also use a lower unit seal kit as well when it goes back together?

Depends......... First if this is your first time and you do not know when the impellar was last changed I would order the entire kit and just not the impellar.

Here is one kit without the pump housing Water Pump Repair Kit without Housing for Johnson/Evinrude 5001594 395060, GLM 12104 - Sierra - iboats

or

here is a kit with the molded housing Mallory Water Pump Kit 9-48200 - iboats

There are no other seals needed aside the water pump stuff. There are no seals between the lower unit and exhaust housing but there is an O ring on the drive shaft.

Yes it is absolutely a two person job......

DO NOT turn the thin shift shaft and remember the direction of the top of it when you drop the lower unit. Turning that shaft will cause non shifting situations.

DO be prepared to swear and mumble about the removal and re-installation of the screw that attaches the top of the shift shaft. It should be the first thing you remove and the last thing you re-attach. (LOL I warned you :))
