Just about ready to launch, try to fire up the engine and it won't start!
Poured a little gas down the card and if fired.......still hard to keep running.
Once it warmed up got it to idle......
Looked down the carb and this is what I saw.
Its a m1409 Edelbrock.
I rebuilt over the winter. What did I mess up? Floats not adjusted properly

1 or 2 things could be the problem. Either the floats are too high or the secondary throttle plates are not closed completely.
First remove the top of the carburetor and check the float setting. If that does not fix the problem remove the throttle plate from the main body and hold it to the light to check for the closing, I once had a problem where the throttle shaft was twisted and one plate was cracked open while the other was closed.

Hi Kenny, you may have got it. When I rebuilt the carb I removed the throttle plates and rods for a thorough cleaning. Maybe they're not sealing now. Guess I need to remove the carb and check.

Just loosen the screws holding the plates and let them settle in, then hold them up to the light, you may have to do it several times to get them right. Good luck

OK.........did the light test.........could see light around all 4 throttle plates.
Tried to adjust but could not get them to seal. Maybe improved a little but not too much.
Are the plates supposed to seal completely?

Spoke to Edelbrock.
They recommended checking the float level.........will do so tonight.

In most 4 barrel carburetors the secondary plates are closed pretty tight. Back off the primary idle stop screw to be sure the plates are properly seated otherwise an idle mixture that is hard to adjust. Do like Edelbrock said about the float level.

Took the airhorn off to check the float level......was pretty far off, way high.
Also found one of the metering rods stuck in the open position.
Reinstalled the carb........now accelerator pump not working.........must have installed the linkage in the wrong hole. Readjusted and now the pump is working. Need to re-adjust the choke and idle mixture tomorrow.........hopefully that's it!

Adjusted the choke tonight.
Pumped the throttle 4 times.
Now w/ the accelerator pump working it fired right off, choke closed as expected and fuel not pouring down carb.
Idled fine @ 700-800RPM once warmed up.
