Help Capt Ken, another yammie leg question

Ok, I've got the gearshift working and decided to grease all the pivot points. Then I noticed grease oozing out of a pivot point on the port side of, I think, the gimbal ring. After a quick clean and scraping out of the grease there appears to be a cover/plug/whatever missing. Any idea what I could put in this hole to stop the grease coming out, and hopefully going where it should?

OK, I think you are talking about the pivot pins on either side of the gimbal ring. If it is, then there is nothing that goes in that hole. Its the place for another trim sensor on a different model. The grease you are seeing is the overflow from the zerk fitting after it passes the pivot pin. If you have noticed, there's a sensor on the starboard side in the same hole. Mercruiser uses the same setup but uses a sensor on both sides. If fact, the same tool used on the Mercruiser to remove the pin is the same as Yamaha's.

Thank you capt Ken.
It just looks a bit messy, so I'm thinking of putting something in the hole, like a chair leg bung or similar, just to neaten it up a bit.

Just don't trap water in the hole. Could set up a corrosion problem. While I've got you on the phone, how's the part availability down under for those things? Everything has dried up for them up here and was wondering how parts were across the pond. Sold my last pair of exhaust risers first of the week.

Re: Help Capt Ken, another yammie leg question

A company in Melbourne, Japan Engineering, seems to have ready access to parts through somewhere in Japan.
My engine has Mercruiser manifolds and risers installed by a Melbourne company. Required minimal modification to make them fit and I haven't had any trouble from that part of the boat, touch wood.

Yep, I've heard the outdrive parts were still being built in Japan. Problem is the manifolds were casted by Crusader for Yamaha but was bought out by PCM. Yamaha didn't have a contract with PCM and they wouldn't cast the parts unless they had nothing better to do. Its getting to the point that I'm really scrapeing the bottom of the barrel to keep some of them running. I try to talk the owners into repowering if they like the boat. I hate to see the customer spend a ton of money this year to repair the boat knowing that next year they are going to hit the wall and there will be no parts and the money spent this year was a waste. Why not go ahead and spend that money toward a repower.

Seeing as Cappy didn't ask the question, I will. Triman,,, what was the modification done to your engine to have the Merc risers and manifolds installed? I'm more interested in the V-8 and have picked up this thread late and don't know which motor you have. I also assume from the discussion that your shifter froze up and would be curious if the shifter in the outdrive froze or the slider in the transom mount.

Was not. Just that all the questions had pretty good answers and I had nothing to add. Me? Scared? You know better.

Hell, Bo, aint no different at my house or pretty much any married mans house. We all tend to walk careful around the wifey. Women have ways to make our lives completly miserable. I am blessed with a wife that understands me somewhat and doesnt complain when I teach the kids to burp.

Sorry about the delay in replying. Sometimes work gets in the way of the important things in life. I bought the boat second hand and had problems with the engine in the warranty period. The dealer modified the manifolds and risers so I have no idea what they did, but it works well!

Triman... it would be great if you could take some digital pics of the manifold/ riser/ hoses/ engine set up with the Merc stuff. If you're willing to do that send them to bo1@boatdoctor.com
